JavaScript can be injected into an exported bookmarks file by placing JavaScript code into user-supplied tags in saved bookmarks. If the resulting exported HTML file is later opened in a browser this JavaScript will be executed. This could be used in social engineering and self-cross-site-scripting (self-XSS) attacks if users were convinced to add malicious tags to bookmarks, export them, and then open the resulting file. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 57.
The bug was discovered 11/14/2017. The weakness was released 06/11/2018 with Mozilla as Bug 1366420 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-7840 since 04/12/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. Upgrading to version 57 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
