OpenSSL up to 1.0.2o/1.1.0h TLS Handshake key management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.2o/1.1.0h (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component TLS Handshake. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a key management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-320. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

During key agreement in a TLS handshake using a DH(E) based ciphersuite a malicious server can send a very large prime value to the client. This will cause the client to spend an unreasonably long period of time generating a key for this prime resulting in a hang until the client has finished. This could be exploited in a Denial Of Service attack. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.0i-dev (Affected 1.1.0-1.1.0h). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2p-dev (Affected 1.0.2-1.0.2o).

The bug was discovered 06/12/2018. The weakness was presented 06/12/2018 by Guido Vranken as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.openssl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-0732 since 11/30/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600.001 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110878 (EulerOS 2.0 SP3 : openssl110f (EulerOS-SA-2018-1214)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157823 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for openssl (ELSA-2018-4249)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.2p-dev or 1.1.0i-dev eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (110878). See 90449, 91385, 91680 and 91681 for similar entries.
