The bug was discovered 06/12/2018. The weakness was disclosed 06/12/2018 with Qihoo 360 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-8246 since 03/14/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:

An information disclosure vulnerability exists when Microsoft Excel improperly discloses the contents of its memory. An attacker who exploited the vulnerability could use the information to compromise the user’s computer or data.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110493 (Security Updates for Microsoft Office Viewer Products (June 2018)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110319 (Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps Security Update June 2018).
