Microsoft Windows 98/2000/ME/XP OLE File memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 98/2000/ME/XP (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component OLE File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003 does not properly "validate the use of memory regions" for COM structured storage files, which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code, aka the "COM Structured Storage Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 02/08/2005. The weakness was published 02/08/2005 by Cesar Cerrudo with Application Security as MS05-010 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0047 since 01/11/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 4 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at argeniss.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2420 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16327 (MS05-012: Vulnerability in OLE and COM Could Allow Code Execution (873333)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l.

Applying the patch MS05-010 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19105), Tenable (16327) and Exploit-DB (1019). Similar entries are available at 1194, 1193, 24280 and 82360.
