A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office Compability Pack and Word 2007 SP3 (Word Processing Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Microsoft Word 2007 SP3 and Office Compatibility Pack SP3 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted Office document, aka "Word Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 01/14/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS14-001 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0259 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/08/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71941 (MS14-001: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2916605)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110233 (Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-001)).

Applying the patch MS14-001 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13076.
