A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to XP/Server 2003 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Drag / Drop Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The weakness was released 02/08/2005 by http-equiv with Microsoft as MS05-008 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0053 since 01/11/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 111 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16324 (MS05-008: Vulnerability in Windows Shell (890047)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100024 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Update (MS05-014)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS05-008 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at update.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
