libvirt up to 1.2.1 rpc/virnetserverclient.c virNetServerClientStartKeepAlive race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in libvirt up to 1.2.1 (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function virNetServerClientStartKeepAlive of the file rpc/virnetserverclient.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the virNetServerClientStartKeepAlive function in libvirt before 1.2.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (libvirtd crash) by closing a connection before a keepalive response is sent.

The weakness was published 12/31/2013 as CVE Request -- libvirt: denial of service with keepalive as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-1447 since 01/14/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

When writing commit 173c291, I missed the fact virNetServerClientClose unlocks the client object before actually clearing client->sock and thus it is possible to hit a window when client->keepalive is NULL while client->sock is not NULL. I was thinking client->sock == NULL was a better check for a closed connection but apparently we have to go with client->keepalive == NULL to actually fix the crash.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72205 (CentOS 6 : libvirt (CESA-2014:0103)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195783 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libvirt Vulnerabilities (USN-2093-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at libvirt.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90393) and Tenable (72205). Similar entries are available at 11780, 11999, 12003 and 13182.
