Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3/3.2 on Windows SPICE service untrusted search path

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3/3.2 on Windows (Virtualization Software). Affected is an unknown code of the component SPICE service Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a untrusted search path vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-426. The product searches for critical resources using an externally-supplied search path that can point to resources that are not under the product's direct control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Unquoted Windows search path vulnerability in the SPICE service, as used in Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) 3.2, allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application in an unspecified folder.

The weakness was disclosed 06/10/2013 with Red Hat as RHSA-2013:0925 as confirmed advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). The advisory is shared for download at rhn.redhat.com. The advisory contains:

Depending on the permissions of the directories in the unquoted search path, a local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to have a binary of their choosing executed with SYSTEM privileges.
This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2152 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1574. The advisory points out:
An unquoted search path flaw was found in the way Spice service for Windows was installed into the system.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78962 (RHEL 6 : rhev-guest-tools-iso (RHSA-2013:0925)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 3.2.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84866) and Tenable (78962). The entry 12071 is pretty similar.
