Linux Kernel up to 3.11.6 farsync.c fst_get_iface resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.11.6 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function fst_get_iface of the file drivers/net/wan/farsync.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The fst_get_iface function in drivers/net/wan/farsync.c in the Linux kernel before 3.11.7 does not properly initialize a certain data structure, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for an SIOCWANDEV ioctl call.

The weakness was shared 10/11/2013 as farsync: fix info leak in ioctl as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1444 since 01/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72857 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-2128-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195881 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-quantal Vulnerabilities (USN-2040-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.4.68, 3.10.18 or 3.11.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
