Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Mozilla Thunderbird 17.x through 17.0.8, Thunderbird ESR 17.x through 17.0.10, and SeaMonkey before 2.20 allows user-assisted remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via an e-mail message containing a data: URL in an IFRAME element, a related issue to CVE-2014-2018.
The weakness was released 01/27/2014 by Ateeq Khan with Vulnerability Lab as Mozilla Bug Bounty #5 - WireTap Remote Web Vulnerability as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6674 since 11/05/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Vulnerability-Lab in HTML and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at i1-news.softpedia-static.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72599 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 12.10 / 13.10 : thunderbird vulnerabilities (USN-2119-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195767 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Thunderbird Vulnerabilities (USN-2119-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
