Linux Kernel up to 2.4.21 /proc information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.21 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file /proc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The /proc filesystem in Linux allows local users to obtain sensitive information by opening various entries in /proc/self before executing a setuid program, which causes the program to fail to change the ownership and permissions of those entries.

The bug was discovered 06/20/2003. The weakness was disclosed 06/20/2003 by Paul Starzetz with iSEC Security Research as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0501 since 07/02/2003. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed in C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15195 (Debian DSA-358-4 : linux-kernel-2.4.18 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12443) and Tenable (15195). The entries 20624, 20756, 20757 and 20758 are pretty similar.
