The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was shared 02/11/2014 by Scott Bell with Security-Assessment.com as MS14-010 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0276 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/09/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5733 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Upgrading to version 10 or 11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS14-010 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13531.
