CouchDB up to 2.1.x HTTP API access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in CouchDB up to 2.1.x and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component HTTP API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

CouchDB administrative users before 2.2.0 can configure the database server via HTTP(S). Due to insufficient validation of administrator-supplied configuration settings via the HTTP API, it is possible for a CouchDB administrator user to escalate their privileges to that of the operating system's user under which CouchDB runs, by bypassing the blacklist of configuration settings that are not allowed to be modified via the HTTP API. This privilege escalation effectively allows a CouchDB admin user to gain arbitrary remote code execution, bypassing CVE-2017-12636 and CVE-2018-8007.

The bug was discovered 08/08/2018. The weakness was disclosed 08/08/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-11769 since 06/05/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111967 (Apache CouchDB 1.x / 2.1.x <= 2.1.2 Privilege Escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13229 (Apache CouchDB Arbitrary Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 2.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (111967) and SecurityFocus (BID 105046†).
