Linux Kernel 2.6.10/2.6.11 Rc1 Bk6 file.c reiserfs_copy_from_user_to_file_region heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.10/2.6.11 Rc1 Bk6 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function reiserfs_copy_from_user_to_file_region of the file file.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Linux kernel 2.6.10 and 2.6.11rc1-bk6 uses different size types for offset arguments to the proc_file_read and locks_read_proc functions, which leads to a heap-based buffer overflow when a signed comparison causes negative integers to be used in a positive context.

The bug was discovered 02/15/2005. The weakness was presented 02/15/2005 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at guninski.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0529 since 02/24/2005. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at guninski.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 53 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21928 (CentOS 3 / 4 : kernel (CESA-2005:366)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117964 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:366)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19326) and Tenable (21928). See 1226, 1227, 1224 and 1223 for similar entries.
