GDM up to 3.29.1 D-Bus Interface use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GDM up to 3.29.1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component D-Bus Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The daemon in GDM through 3.29.1 does not properly unexport display objects from its D-Bus interface when they are destroyed, which allows a local attacker to trigger a use-after-free via a specially crafted sequence of D-Bus method calls, resulting in a denial of service or potential code execution.

The bug was discovered 08/14/2018. The weakness was shared 08/14/2018 by Chris Coulson (Website). The advisory is available at usn.ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-14424 since 07/19/2018. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 112146 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : gdm (SUSE-SU-2018:2527-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171588 (OpenSUSE Security Update for gdm (openSUSE-SU-2018:2818-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (112146).
