The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 Service Pack 5 and earlier, and 8.1 Service Pack 3 and earlier, generates different login exceptions that suggest why an authentication attempt fails, which makes it easier for remote attackers to guess passwords via brute force attacks.
The bug was discovered 02/14/2005. The weakness was shared 02/14/2005 by Mitja Kolsek with BEA (Website). The advisory is shared at dev2dev.bea.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0432 since 02/15/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18365 (BEA WebLogic <= 8.1 SP4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (XSS, DoS, ID, more)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.
