BEA WebLogic 7.0/8.1 cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in BEA WebLogic 7.0/8.1 (Application Server Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 Service Pack 5 and earlier, and 8.1 Service Pack 3 and earlier, generates different login exceptions that suggest why an authentication attempt fails, which makes it easier for remote attackers to guess passwords via brute force attacks.

The bug was discovered 02/14/2005. The weakness was shared 02/14/2005 by Mitja Kolsek with BEA (Website). The advisory is shared at dev2dev.bea.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0432 since 02/15/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18365 (BEA WebLogic <= 8.1 SP4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (XSS, DoS, ID, more)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftpna.beasys.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19321) and Tenable (18365). The entries 1421, 1512, 1518 and 1514 are related to this item.
