A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in PyCryptodome up to 3.6.5. Affected is an unknown code block of the file AESNI.c. The manipulation of the argument data_len
as part of a Messages leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
PyCryptodome before 3.6.6 has an integer overflow in the data_len variable in AESNI.c, related to the AESNI_encrypt and AESNI_decrypt functions, leading to the mishandling of messages shorter than 16 bytes.
The bug was discovered 08/17/2018. The weakness was published 08/20/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-15560 since 08/19/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117373 (Fedora 27 : python-pycryptodomex (2018-a42eb4ac61)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277497 (Fedora Security Update for python-pycryptodomex (FEDORA-2018-8fd21e2a72)).
Upgrading to version 3.6.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (117373).
