libvirt before 2.2 includes Ceph credentials on the qemu command line when using RADOS Block Device (aka RBD), which allows local users to obtain sensitive information via a process listing.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2016. The weakness was presented 08/20/2018 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5160 since 07/01/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157323 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for libvirt (ELSA-2016-2577)).
Upgrading to version 2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
