A vulnerability was found in pkgconf 1.5.0/1.5.1/1.5.2. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function dequote of the component PC File Handler. pkgconf version 1.5.0 to 1.5.2 contains a Buffer Overflow vulnerability in dequote() that can result in dequote() function returns 1-byte allocation if initial length is 0, leading to buffer overflow. This attack appear to be exploitable via specially crafted .pc file. This vulnerability appears to have been fixed in 1.5.3.

The bug was discovered 07/29/2018. The weakness was shared 08/20/2018 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.dereferenced.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-1000221 since 08/20/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
