Untrusted search path vulnerability in Microsoft Lync 2010, 2010 Attendee, and 2010 Attendant allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a .ocsmeet file, aka "Lync Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 06/12/2012 by Hamburgers Maccoy as MS12-039 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1849 since 03/22/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59457 (MS12-039: Vulnerabilities in Lync Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2707956)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90811 (Microsoft Lync Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-039)).

Applying the patch MS12-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12329.
