A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Samba up to 4.6.15/4.7.8/4.8.3 (File Transfer Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component File Name Handler. The manipulation as part of a Directory leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. A heap-buffer overflow was found in the way samba clients processed extra long filename in a directory listing. A malicious samba server could use this flaw to cause arbitrary code execution on a samba client. Samba versions before 4.6.16, 4.7.9 and 4.8.4 are vulnerable.
The bug was discovered 08/14/2018. The weakness was presented 08/22/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-10858 since 05/09/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157845 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for samba (ELSA-2018-3056)).
Upgrading to version 4.6.16, 4.7.9 or 4.8.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
