A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in postgresql-jdbc up to 42.2.4 (Database Software). This affects an unknown part of the component SSL Factory Handler. The manipulation of the argument Hostname
as part of a Certificate leads to a certificate validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-297. The product communicates with a host that provides a certificate, but the product does not properly ensure that the certificate is actually associated with that host. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A weakness was found in postgresql-jdbc before version 42.2.5. It was possible to provide an SSL Factory and not check the host name if a host name verifier was not provided to the driver. This could lead to a condition where a man-in-the-middle attacker could masquerade as a trusted server by providing a certificate for the wrong host, as long as it was signed by a trusted CA.
The bug was discovered 08/30/2018. The weakness was shared 08/30/2018 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-10936 since 05/09/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1587.003 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277733 (Fedora Security Update for postgresql-jdbc (FEDORA-2019-1b9e80874d)).
Upgrading to version 42.2.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
