Google Android Keystore LK integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Google Android (Smartphone Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Keystore LK. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In all android releases(Android for MSM, Firefox OS for MSM, QRD Android) from CAF using the linux kernel, while accessing the keystore in LK, an integer overflow vulnerability exists which may potentially lead to a buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 09/04/2018. The weakness was presented 09/18/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at source.codeaurora.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-15828 since 10/24/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/16/2023). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
