A vulnerability was found in Wechat Broadcast Plugin up to 1.2.0 on WordPress (WordPress Plugin). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file Image.php. The manipulation of the argument url with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. The Wechat Broadcast plugin 1.2.0 and earlier for WordPress allows Directory Traversal via the Image.php url parameter.

The bug was discovered 09/19/2018. The weakness was presented 09/24/2018 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-16283 since 08/31/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:Image.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
