The peerAddresses API in the Belkin WeMo Home Automation firmware before 3949 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via an XML document containing an external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, related to an XML External Entity (XXE) issue.

The weakness was released 02/18/2014 by Mike Davis with IOActive as VU#656302 as confirmed vulnerability note (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The public release was coordinated with Belkin. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-6948 since 12/04/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
