Daimler Mercedes Me App 2.11.0-846 on iOS Certificate Pinning information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Daimler Mercedes Me App 2.11.0-846 on iOS (Vehicle Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Certificate Pinning. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 02/28/2018. The weakness was released 10/09/2018 by Marc Ruef with scip AG as VulDB 125081 as confirmed entry (VulDB). The advisory is shared at vuldb.com. The public release happened without involvement of Daimler. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-18071 since 10/09/2018. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/23/2023). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact.

A public exploit has been developed by Marc Ruef. The exploit is available at vuldb.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 222 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The code used by the exploit is:

curl --request GET \
  --url https://<API_URL> \
  --header 'authorization: Bearer e253fdd3-67f1-4dcc-bcd6-9f9c9278fe6f'

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Vendor was contacted for the first time on 08/06/2018 and assured to get back to the researcher. No further contact happened which is why a second request was sent on 09/11/2018. The vendor did not respond until 10/09/2018. A later release establishes a PIN which can be set within the Mercedes Me app and is required to lock/unlock a car.
