Mozilla Firefox 1.0 .lnk File Remote Code Execution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.0 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component .lnk File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

String handling functions in Mozilla 1.7.3, Firefox 1.0, and Thunderbird before 1.0.2, such as the nsTSubstring_CharT::Replace function, do not properly check the return values of other functions that resize the string, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code by forcing an out-of-memory state that causes a reallocation to fail and return a pointer to a fixed address, which leads to heap corruption.

The weakness was disclosed 03/01/2005 by Masayuki Nakano (taviso) with Mozilla as MFSA2005-28 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0255 since 02/09/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 03/10/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17270 (RHEL 4 : mozilla (RHSA-2005:277)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (17270). The entries 1258, 1257, 1261 and 1253 are pretty similar.
