A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9/10/11 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 through 11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was disclosed 03/11/2014 by lokihardt@ASRT with Zero Day Initiative as MS14-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0298 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1456 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72930 (MS14-012: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2925418)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100180 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS14-012)).
Applying the patch MS14-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13696.
