A use-after-free in nsINode::ReplaceOrInsertBefore during DOM operations resulting in potentially exploitable crashes. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 50.

The bug was discovered 11/15/2016. The weakness was shared 10/18/2018 by Abdulrahman Alqabandi (Nils) with Mozilla as Bug 1308922 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-9069 since 10/27/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/30/2023).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95590 (openSUSE Security Update : Mozilla Firefox / Thunderbird and NSS (openSUSE-2016-1407)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 50 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
