A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 61.x (Mail Client Software). It has been declared as critical. When the Mozilla Updater opens a MAR format file which contains a very long item filename, an out-of-bounds write can be triggered, leading to a potentially exploitable crash. This requires running the Mozilla Updater manually on the local system with the malicious MAR file in order to occur. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 62, Firefox ESR < 60.2, and Thunderbird < 60.2.1.
The bug was discovered 09/05/2018. The weakness was shared 10/18/2018 by Holger Fuhrmannek (Alex) as Bug 1473113 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-12379 since 06/14/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
