Divide-by-zero vulnerabilities in the function arlib_add_symbols() in arlib.c in elfutils 0.174 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) with a crafted ELF file, as demonstrated by eu-ranlib, because a zero sh_entsize is mishandled.
The bug was discovered 10/18/2018. The weakness was presented 10/19/2018 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-18521 since 10/19/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation.
