A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19 (Operating System). Affected is the function cdrom_ioctl_select_disc
of the file drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Kernel Memory). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 4.19. An information leak in cdrom_ioctl_select_disc in drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c could be used by local attackers to read kernel memory because a cast from unsigned long to int interferes with bounds checking. This is similar to CVE-2018-10940 and CVE-2018-16658.
The bug was discovered 10/03/2018. The weakness was published 10/28/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-18710 since 10/27/2018. Local access is required to approach this attack. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119158 (Fedora 27 : kernel / kernel-headers / kernel-tools (2018-b68776e5b0)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171709 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:3746-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (119158). Similar entries are available at 99009, 109136, 110475 and 124429.
