A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.134/4.14.77/4.18.15 (Operating System). This affects the function mremap
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Since Linux kernel version 3.2, the mremap() syscall performs TLB flushes after dropping pagetable locks. If a syscall such as ftruncate() removes entries from the pagetables of a task that is in the middle of mremap(), a stale TLB entry can remain for a short time that permits access to a physical page after it has been released back to the page allocator and reused. This is fixed in the following kernel versions: 4.9.135, 4.14.78, 4.18.16, 4.19.
The bug was discovered 10/29/2018. The weakness was disclosed 10/29/2018 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-18281 since 10/12/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118952 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:3746-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171709 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:3746-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.9.135, 4.14.78, 4.18.16 or 4.19 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (118952). The entries 99009, 109136, 110475 and 124429 are pretty similar.
