SourceTree up to 2.x on Windows Git Subrepository Argument command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in SourceTree up to 2.x on Windows. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Git Subrepository Handler. The manipulation as part of a Argument leads to a command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

There was an argument injection vulnerability in Sourcetree for Windows from version 0.5.1.0 before version 3.0.0 via Git subrepositories in Mercurial repositories. An attacker with permission to commit to a Mercurial repository linked in Sourcetree for Windows is able to exploit this issue to gain code execution on the system.

The bug was discovered 10/31/2018. The weakness was released 11/05/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at jira.atlassian.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-13397 since 07/06/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 3.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 126460.
