Mozilla Firefox 27 on Android Crash Reporter AndroidManifest.xml.in path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox 27 on Android (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file mobile/android/base/AndroidManifest.xml.in of the component Crash Reporter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Android Crash Reporter in Mozilla Firefox before 28.0 on Android allows attackers to trigger the transmission of local files to arbitrary servers, or cause a denial of service (application crash), via a crafted application that specifies Android Crash Reporter arguments.

The weakness was released 03/18/2014 by Roee Hay (OUSPG) with Mozilla as MFSA2014-24 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1506 since 01/16/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. The advisory points out:

Firefox for Android includes a Crash Reporter which sends crash data to Mozilla for analysis. Security researcher Roee Hay reported that third party Android applications could launch the crash reporter with their own arguments. Normally applications cannot read the private files of another application, but this vulnerability allowed a malicious application to specify a local file in the Firefox profile and it to its own server leading to information disclosure. The crash reporter can also be invoked in a manner causing an immediate crash of Firefox, leading to a potential denial of service (DOS) attack.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73111 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (610de647-af8d-11e3-a25b-b4b52fce4ce8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 28 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91865) and Tenable (73111). bugzilla.mozilla.org is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 12646, 12647, 12648 and 12649.
