The log_cookie function in mod_log_config.c in the mod_log_config module in the Apache HTTP Server before 2.4.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault and daemon crash) via a crafted cookie that is not properly handled during truncation.

The weakness was disclosed 03/19/2014 by Rainer M Canavan, Ning Zhang and Amin Tora (Neustar) as Bug 1077871 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0098 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73265 (Fedora 20 : httpd-2.4.9-2.fc20 (2014-4555)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 105728 (EOL/Obsolete Software: Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x).

Upgrading to version 2.4.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
