Nagios XI 5.5.6 allows local authenticated attackers to escalate privileges to root via Autodiscover_new.php.

The bug was discovered 11/13/2018. The weakness was presented 11/14/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tenable.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-15710 since 08/22/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1202 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:Autodiscover_new.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
