In System Management Module (SMM) versions prior to 1.06, the SMM records hashed passwords to a debug log when user authentication fails.

The bug was discovered 11/15/2018. The weakness was disclosed 11/27/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at support.lenovo.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-16095 since 08/29/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
