Atlantis Word Processor 3.2.7.2 Open Document Parser write-what-where condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Atlantis Word Processor 3.2.7.2. This affects an unknown code block of the component Open Document Parser. The manipulation as part of a Document leads to a write-what-where condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-123. Any condition where the attacker has the ability to write an arbitrary value to an arbitrary location, often as the result of a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An exploitable arbitrary write vulnerability exists in the open document format parser of the Atlantis Word Processor, version 3.2.7.2, while trying to null-terminate a string. A specially crafted document can allow an attacker to pass an untrusted value as a length to a constructor. This constructor will miscalculate a length and then use it to calculate the position to write a null byte. This can allow an attacker to corrupt memory, which can result in code execution under the context of the application. An attacker must convince a victim to open a specially crafted document in order to trigger this vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 11/20/2018. The weakness was disclosed 12/01/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at talosintelligence.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-4038 since 01/02/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371342 (Atlantis Word Processor Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
