Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD up to 11.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component NFS Server. The manipulation as part of a Length Field leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In FreeBSD before 11.2-STABLE(r340854) and 11.2-RELEASE-p5, an integer overflow error can occur when handling the client address length field in an NFSv4 request. Unprivileged remote users with access to the NFS server can crash the system by sending a specially crafted NFSv4 request.
The bug was discovered 11/27/2018. The weakness was presented 12/04/2018 by Jakub Jirasek with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.freebsd.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-17158 since 09/18/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119307 (FreeBSD < 11.2-RELEASE-p5 Multiple vulnerabilities in NFS server code (FreeBSD-SA-18:03.nfs)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 11.2-STABLE(r340854) or 11.2-RELEASE-p5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (119307) and SecurityFocus (BID 106192†). See VDB-127462 and VDB-127464 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
