A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Kubernetes up to 1.9.9/1.10.5/1.11.1 (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Volume Mount Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In Kubernetes versions 1.9.0-1.9.9, 1.10.0-1.10.5, and 1.11.0-1.11.1, user input was handled insecurely while setting up volume mounts on Windows nodes, which could lead to command line argument injection.
The bug was discovered 07/03/2018. The weakness was disclosed 12/05/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-1002101 since 06/04/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 155 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
