Xen up to 4.11.x on Intel x86 HLE Transaction input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Xen up to 4.11.x on Intel x86 (Virtualization Software). This affects an unknown code of the component HLE Transaction Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in Xen through 4.11.x on Intel x86 platforms allowing guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host OS hang) because Xen does not work around Intel's mishandling of certain HLE transactions associated with the KACQUIRE instruction prefix.

The bug was discovered 11/06/2018. The weakness was shared 12/08/2018 by Security Team (Matt) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-19967 since 12/07/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119288 (Xen Project HLE Transaction 'XACQUIRE' DoS (XSA-282)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171796 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2019:13921-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (119288). The entries 107985, 123007, 127657 and 127713 are related to this item.
