A vulnerability has been found in Apache NiFi 1.8.0 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Cluster Handler. The manipulation as part of a Request leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
When a client request to a cluster node was replicated to other nodes in the cluster for verification, the Content-Length was forwarded. On a DELETE request, the body was ignored, but if the initial request had a Content-Length value other than 0, the receiving nodes would wait for the body and eventually timeout. Mitigation: The fix to check DELETE requests and overwrite non-zero Content-Length header values was applied on the Apache NiFi 1.8.0 release. Users running a prior 1.x release should upgrade to the appropriate release.
The bug was discovered 10/26/2018. The weakness was published 12/19/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at nifi.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-17194 since 09/19/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/22/2020).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 54 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
