A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Python up to 3.7.0 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown code of the file Modules/_pickle.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Modules/_pickle.c in Python before 3.7.1 has an integer overflow via a large LONG_BINPUT value that is mishandled during a "resize to twice the size" attempt. This issue might cause memory exhaustion, but is only relevant if the pickle format is used for serializing tens or hundreds of gigabytes of data.
The bug was discovered 09/21/2018. The weakness was shared 12/23/2018 with Microsoft (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.python.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-20406 since 12/23/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 93 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121540 (SUSE SLED15 / SLES15 Security Update : python3 (SUSE-SU-2019:0215-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172020 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for python3 (SUSE-SU-2019:0243-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (121540). The entries 130627, 131035, 131530 and 132134 are related to this item.
