The issue has been introduced in 06/26/2013. The weakness was released 04/08/2014 by Abdul-Aziz Hariri with Zero Day Initiative as MS14-018 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1760 since 01/29/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/16/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 286 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. A patch matrix is available in the vendor's advisory. A restart is required. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13513.
