pubconv.dll in Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 and 2007 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (incorrect pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted .pub file, aka "Arbitrary Pointer Dereference Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 04/08/2014 by iDefense Labs with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS14-020 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via iDefense. The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1759 since 01/29/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73417 (MS14-020: Vulnerability in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2950145)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.

Applying the patch MS14-020 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
