Cisco ASA up to 9.1 ASDM access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Cisco ASA up to 9.1 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component ASDM Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software 8.2 before 8.2(5.47), 8.4 before 8.4(7.5), 8.7 before 8.7(1.11), 9.0 before 9.0(3.10), and 9.1 before 9.1(3.4) allows remote authenticated users to gain privileges by leveraging level-0 ASDM access, aka Bug ID CSCuj33496.

The weakness was published 04/09/2014 by Jonathan Claudius with Cisco as cisco-sa-20140409-asa as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. The advisory contains:

Only traffic destined to the affected device can be used to exploit this vulnerability. This vulnerability affects Cisco ASA Software configured in routed or transparent firewall mode and single or multiple context mode. This vulnerability can be triggered by IP version 4 (IPv4) and IP version 6 (IPv6) traffic. A TCP three-way handshake is needed to exploit this vulnerability.
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-2126 since 02/25/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
The vulnerability is due to improper privilege assignment to users with privilege level 0. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by logging in to the Cisco ASDM with user credentials with privilege level 0. An exploit could allow the attacker or an unprivileged user to elevate the access privileges and gain administrative access to the affected system.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73533 (Cisco ASA Software Multiple Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20140409-asa)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO.

Applying the patch cisco-sa-20140409-asa is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at tools.cisco.com. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting username cisco1 password privilege 1.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling IPv4/IPv6. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92383) and Tenable (73533). tools.cisco.com is providing further details. Similar entries are available at 12863, 12862 and 12861.
