In Poppler 0.72.0, PDFDoc::setup in PDFDoc.cc allows attackers to cause a denial-of-service (application crash caused by Object.h SIGABRT, because of a wrong return value from PDFDoc::setup) by crafting a PDF file in which an xref data structure is mishandled during extractPDFSubtype processing.
The bug was discovered 12/31/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/03/2019 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at gitlab.freedesktop.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-20662 since 01/03/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277626 (Fedora Security Update for poppler (FEDORA-2019-387e017332)).
