A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 1.0.2 (Mail Client Software) and classified as problematic. The bug was discovered 02/07/2005. The weakness was disclosed 03/22/2005 by Michael Krax (mikx) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mikx.de. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0231 since 02/07/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

The exploit is available at mikx.de. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21930 (CentOS 3 : mozilla (CESA-2005:384)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117973 (CentOS Security Update for Mozilla (CESA-2005:384)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3304.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19264) and Tenable (21930). The entries 921, 949, 1115 and 1182 are pretty similar.
