Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3.8 AFP Server denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer signedness error in Apple File Service (AFP Server) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a negative UAM string length in a FPLoginExt packet.

The bug was discovered 02/04/2005. The weakness was presented 03/15/2005 by Braden Thomas (felinemenace) with felinemenace.org (Website). The advisory is shared at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-0340 since 02/10/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Kevin Finisterre and been published 6 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 39 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17587 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2005-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19263), Tenable (17587) and Exploit-DB (2111). See 1178, 1296, 1295 and 1294 for similar entries.
